MacBook not connecting to Hotspot: Wi Fi symbol shows exclamation

Hello,

I am having issues connecting my MacBook Pro to my hotspot via my iPhone 10. When I try to connect, it doesn’t even ask for my hotspots password and just gives me a Wi Fi symbol with an exclamation on it. At the time of attempt, my iPhone has 2 bars of cellular signal. Can someone explain why this is occurring?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

my iPhone has 2 bars of cellular signal.

Try first to optimize the range of the mobile network, see this Apple article:

  • Call your carrier or stop by and ask them to make sure that you can use Personal Hotspot with your plan.
  • Settings -> scroll to Personal Hotspot.
