Annoying sound when opening mail folder.

This is really annoying. The "telegraph" sound sometimes plays when opening a mail folder. It looks like it happens when unread emails are in the folder that must have some specific content. All mail notifications are off. Please help.

Hi Rich--T,

It might be possible that another app is being triggered when you open the email. The steps in this resource will help you look to see if you have any audio alerts set for other apps that might sounding at this time:

Change notification settings on iPhone

We also recommend a restart since it is a simple step that often fixes software issues, Restart your iPhone as well as making sure your iPhone is up to date: Update your iPhone or iPad

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks Lager1. This problem started in early 2022. I always update, I've restarted endless times, I've even tried backup and restore. Nothing helps. I've just been though all notifications and turned sounds off. No joy.

Mail is directed to a number of folders by rules at the mail server. The sound occurs when a folder is opened, not an actual email. It only does it once for a specific email even if it's left unread. It only affects some emails but I can't work out why. I have a testing email subject "Test" contents "Test" carriage return "Sent from my iPhone" Even this causes the sound when the containing folder is opened. I would say about half received emails cause the problem. Rich.

Thanks Chris. It's a btinternet account here in the UK. The rules are located within the btinternet environment and move emails to specific folders based on From, To or Subject. The sound seems to be independent of folder, I don't think I've found a folder where it doesn't happen. It also happens to emails in the inbox which are not affected by any rules. Richard.

Hey Rich--T,

Do you happen to use any other applications that might use the Mail app as part of their function? For example, an app that sends read receipts would utilize the Mail app but not in as direct a fashion as sending an email normally. This is an important aspect because if an app like that is in use, it could be sending a read receipt, which might be triggering a sound similar to the one you're experiencing. If nothing like this is in use, it might be best to Get Support directly from Apple moving forward so they can continue testing with you.

Take care.
