What do I do now? I traded in my flawless well cared for iPad and it was returned with damage that was done somewhere between my house and Apple. Am I screwed because their packaging apparently was not sufficient?

You will probably have to deal with the third party company (trade in partner) you sent it to; if you have the box and can prove damage (did you take pics before sendin it?), contact them and make a claim.
