I think you’re right, that does like like what they mean.
Perhaps Apple should write ‘GPS will only provide distance when you do freestyle’, if they want to use it as a synonym for front crawl, as ‘a freestyle stroke’ is a little indistinct.
Or better still, just put front crawl!
I mean in terms of distance and a potential map of the swim…

Yes freestyle is generally considered to be "front crawl",in Apple speak.
