MacBook Pro microphone does not work after sleep or hibernate mode

Hi Apple Community,

After upgrading to macOS 15.5 (build 24F74), I'm encountering a persistent issue with my MacBook Pro’s internal microphone. Here's a summary of the behavior:

Issue Summary

Model: MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021), Apple M1 Pro

macOS Version: 15.5 (24F74)

Repro Steps:

Use the laptop normally—microphone works fine.

Close the lid or allow the system to sleep.

On wake, the microphone only outputs a constant high-pitched screeching/static noise.

Issue affects built-in apps (Voice Memos) and third-party apps (Microsoft Teams).

Reboot resolves the issue—until the laptop sleeps again.

Troubleshooting Performed

Apple Store diagnostics ran clean — no hardware issues detected.

Microphone worked immediately after rebooting post-diagnostics at the Genius Bar.

Reproduced again the next day after waking from sleep (no reboot in between).

Issue recurs regardless of whether the laptop is plugged in or on battery.

Verified in multiple environments (home, office, phone booth) — not tied to external peripherals.

No third-party audio drivers or unusual software installed.

Temporary Workaround

A reboot reliably restores microphone functionality.

Request for Help

This seems to be an OS-level bug affecting microphone behavior post-sleep/hibernate. Has anyone else encountered this? Are there any permanent workarounds or NVRAM/SMC-like resets for Apple Silicon that might help?

Thanks,

Sebastian

Hi,

I'm experiencing the exact same issue on my MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) with the M1 Pro chip, running macOS 15.5 (build 24F74).

Just like described:

  • The internal microphone works perfectly after a fresh restart.
  • But after the machine goes to sleep and wakes up, the microphone only produces static or screeching noise, regardless of the app (Voice Memos, Zoom, Teams, etc.).

I've also confirmed:

  • No unusual audio software or drivers installed.
  • Microphone permissions are correctly set.
  • Apple Diagnostics shows no hardware problems.

It definitely seems like a macOS-level bug introduced in 15.5. I’m hoping Apple acknowledges and resolves this soon, as it’s affecting daily work and meetings.

Let me know if you (or anyone else here) finds a workaround that doesn't involve rebooting!

Computer already went into Apple Genius Bar, no physical damage they reported. We were able to replicate the issue, but no fix was given to permanently resolve. Also, it is consistent with the behaviors all of us are posting about; a hardware problem would either be intermittent, not resolved consistently with a software fix (reboot), etc.

We are facing the same issue, and as mentioned here, reboot fixes the issue, which is not ideal. Apple needs to address this, as this is a huge inconvenience.

FYI, I see & some other users in this thread wondering why Apple doesn't address this issue.....well this is just a user to user forum.....Apple does not participate on these forums and I very much doubt anyone in Apple support is reading this forum.

Users who want Apple to address a particular issue must first contact Apple support directly and you must exhaust the low level tech's list of tips so that your issue is finally logged as an issue that can get escalated to higher support & engineers for investigation where they will decide if they want to provide a fix. Unfortunately 99% of users never choose to do this so Apple remains unaware of any problems.

Users can also provide Apple with product feedback here, but I'm sure it is less likely to make a difference than an actual support ticket unless hundreds of thousands of people make the same feedback unless someone at Apple reads a suggestion & says "Why didn't we think of that before".

I'm no expert, however, have you considered the possibility of physical damage to the Microphone's flap retainers which may make the microphone's ribbon cable unstable in place? or perhaps there's pure physical damage to the ribbon cable itself?

sorry that I don't have more value to provide to help diagnose this. :(
