Why do Live Captions keep turning on automatically?

I was using Live Captions until I noticed it wasn’t appearing on X or reels when needed. I shut it off. Since, it randomly turns on, on its own. I turn it off again to have it suddenly appear saying, “Listening”. I’ve attempted combinations of turning it off, restarting the ph & such. It continues to turn on, on its own. Is there a way to keep it off for good? It’s become frustrating.

Make sure you don't have the Accessiblity Shortcut enabled. Settings>Accessibility>Accessibility Shortcut>Off

I’m happy to report after contacting Apple & checking back tap as they asked, I had it on. I don’t recall setting up double tap for live captions but this was the case for me. Hopefully, I don’t see it again unless I choose to.

The feature is awesome and has made it possible for me to attend remote meetings w/o putting in a request for real time captions days in advance.

Seems you may need to check the settings again, to make sure Live Captions are turned off everywhere.

ie: Check through the steps below: turning off wherever it has been turned on.

For iOS18: Get live captions of spoken audio on iPhone - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Set up and customize Live Captions

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Live Captions, then turn on Live Captions.
  2. Tap Appearance to customize the text, size, and color of the captions.
  3. By default, Live Captions are shown across all apps.

To get live captions only for certain apps such as FaceTime or RTT, turn them on below In-App Live Captions

Eg: Turn on Live Captions in a FaceTime call on iPhone - Apple Support

For FaceTime: Eg: says:

To stop showing the transcribed conversation on the screen, tap the screen, tap  at the top of the FaceTime controls, then turn off Live Captions.
