AirPrint not working after iOS 18.4.1 update with Brother Printer

After updating my iPhone 12 to iOS 18.4.1, my Brother MFC-J470DW printer will not connect via AirPrint. I verified that both devices are on the same network and rebooted both devices. I can see the printer when using the Brother app and if I specifically search for it through AirPrint. AirPrint will select the printer and then immediately say no printer selected. I print primarily from my phone. What is the solution to the issue? Others have reported same issue but with Cannon printers.

iPhone 12, iOS 18

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! This was the solution. I forgot my home network and rejoined it after entering the password. AirPrint did not show my printer at first and when I searched for it, it popped up. Also, years ago when I setup my network at home, I assigned a static IP address to my printer and on my WiFi router so when the printer restarts, it stays the same IP address.

Thank you for your input and here is some more info.

My device is not jailbroken and I do have daily iCloud backups turned on. I have also verified that my AirPrint feature works on my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro and my 5th Gen iPad. After doing more research, it seems some of the identical issues date back to 18.0.1 with newer iPhones than mine. (AirPrint not working after iOS 18.0.1 upd… - Apple Community). If by chance it is a device settings issue, where in the settings is AirPrint located? After searching, there is no specific location under AirPlay or any other app. And I can print using the already installed Brother app. This app makes me save the file(email, pdf, etc) to my phone and then search for that file in order for me to print. Where when using AirPrint, I can open up the email, pdf, etc and print right from the screen.

I have had the same issue for months now...so far the only solution that works for me is to:

  1. Download brother iPrint&Scan
  2. Open up the iprint&scan app...if your printer does not show in the list of printers, you will need to power cycle it
  3. If your printer does show up...
    1. You will need to send your document/item to the iprint&scan app instead of airprint.
    2. To do this open up the document/item and push the share button
    3. Scroll to the list of apps and go all the way right to "More" if you dont see the iprint&scan app listed
    4. Select iprint&scan
    5. Click print
    6. Hopefully this will print your doc.
  4. Every time you send any doc via phone to the brother printer, this will screw with the connection to the printer and you will need to power cycle the printer to get it to print with print&scan
  5. Yep this is a headache...but the only way I have found it to work with my phone currently
  6. Hopefully this works for you.
  7. I keep checking the brother site and dont see an update to fix this issues..so not sure if its an IOS or brother issue, either way not sure if a fix exists yet.

Following the recent update to iOS version 18.4.1 on our iPad, we are no longer able to use AirPrint to connect to the Brother QL-820NWB label printer. This functionality is essential, as a third-party application relies on AirPrint to produce visitor badges.

We have attempted the same process using an iPhone also running iOS 18.4.1, with identical results—AirPrint is not functioning with the printer. Prior to this iOS update, the printer was operating without issues.

We have also updated the Brother QL-820NWB to the latest firmware version 1.30. Using the Brother iPrint&Scan app is not a viable workaround for our use case.

At this point, we are considering rolling the device back to iOS 18.4.0; however, it’s unclear which version introduced the compatibility issue.

We would appreciate any guidance or suggestions on how to restore AirPrint functionality with the Brother QL-820NWB under iOS 18.4.1.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro and have always been able to print to my HP printer. But after 18.4.1 impossible. I have rebooted, checked settings etc all ok. My Partner has a new 16 pro and had some issues but seems ok now, fingers crossed. The only difference I have noticed is the wifi. I seem to have a choice between the router or the printer. I do not recall that before but just maybe when it all worked you leave alone and now who knows.

Thanks for your help. The weird thing is, I can still AirPrint from my iPad and my MacBook Pro without issues and using the same printer. So could it be that the Brother software does not support the new iOS or could it be that the new iOS made some security changes to restrict AirPrint to older model printers?

The same thing happened to both my Brother and Canon printers but neither were resolved at the same time. The issue is with the manufacturer's software. They are the ones responsible for updating their software, not Apple. Leave feedback with them so they are aware of the issue.
