Apple Pencil stop working after 18.3.1 update

10th iPad, 1st Gen Apple Pencil, iPadOS 18.3.1

Eveything was working fine until I did the latest iPadOS 18.3.1

  1. I've forced restarted with the pencil connected to the iPad
  2. I've forced restarted without the pencil connected
  3. I've rebooted with Bluetooth off then turned on
  4. I've rebooted with bluetooth on then turned it off and back on
  5. I've reset all settings
  6. I've factory reset with the pencil connected
  7. I've factory reset without the pencil connected

It does not recognize or pair with this iPad after the iPadOS update to 18.3.1.

iPad, iPadOS 18

Begin by "forgetting" the Pencil from Bluetooth settings:

Settings > Bluetooth > [My Devices] Apple Pencil - tap the blue "i" icon, then select Forget this Device

Once removed from Bluetooth Settings, re-pair the Pencil with the iPad.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, the next step is to reset your iPad's Network Settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings

In many years, I have experienced just one occurrence of an Apple Pencil seemingly failing subsequent to updating iPadOS. On this singular occasion, the Pencil refused to re-pair with the host iPad. The fix was to pair the Pencil with a different compatible iPad - after which the Pencil would again pair with the original iPad.
