Password protect an m4a file on my Mac?

Is there any way to do this? Even if I have to convert it, I just need to be sure it is password protected. I tried saving it in Notes but can't lock it there either.

Thanks!

I don't believe that the regular .m4a (non-DRMed AAC) format supports password protection.

If you are storing the file "loose" in the Finder, rather than in your Music library, you could use Disk Utility to create a small, password-protected disk image file. Then you could mount the "disk", copy the AAC file onto it, and eject the "disk". The copy on the disk image would now be protected by the password on the enclosing disk image.

To play the AAC file, you could mount the disk image (which would require entering the password), then use Quick Look on the AAC file (instead of double-clicking it).

This seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to, to hide an AAC file …
