CarPlay notification related issues

Phone updated last night and now having issues with CarPlay. At first it would not allow me to use my car stereo while the phone was plugged in. Restarted everything and got that working. Then I wasn’t getting any notifications for text messages.

Changed some settings with Siri that I hadn’t previously needed to have on and now it will read out my messages but there is no way to reply anymore without clicking through several screens. This seems to defeat the purpose of hands free. I can’t even ask Siri to reply because she responds to every request with “I can’t do that while you’re in the car.” I do not have any driving focus feature turned on.
