distorted sound while recording clean guitar

I have trouble while recording a clean amplifier guitar in my studio, since the result is a mildly distorted sound, similar to the one that comes out from an amplified acoustic guitar. I have recorded a different amplifier before (a Fender Twin Reverb), but a part from a couple of resonant frequencies the sound didn't resulted distorted. Now I'm trying to record a Roland JC-40 but the result is a messy semi-distorted sound on the 2-4khz. In the process of troubleshooting the problem I changed everything from microphones to audio interface

  • routed the cables previously passing through a mixer directly in to the audio interface
  • changed audio interface, an Audiend id24 and a scarlett 2i2
  • changed mic, from a sure sm57 to a ribbon one. The ribbon recorded nastier sound

I had a macbook air M1 before, and I had no problem. I want to understand if the problem is of physical nature or if it's just compatibility issues / software issues.

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.3
