Model A1843 Keyboard not recognized

From the time I bought this keyboard my M1 MacMini has not recognized it. The faint printing on the back indicates its a genuine apple keyboard.

But when I set it up it won't recognize it, any ideas on why and how I can overcome this, because currently I had to use a third party USB 2.0 keyboard to start the system in safe boot mode as this A1843 will not recognize the shift key upon startup normally or from the recovery menu like the official safe boot mode instructions illustrate.

Thank you in advance for your time and expertise

The only suggestion I have is turn off the keyboard (assuming it’s fully charged, then System Settings->Bluetooth->Select the Keyboard->click on the info circle and Forget this device. Turn the keyboard back on and start the pairing process over.

And if that doesn’t solve the problem my next thought would be that the keyboard is defective.
