When connected by either method, can your Mac still access devices on the local network ... just not access websites on the Internet?

If so, this typically indicates an issue with DNS. One simple test, regardless of what method your Mac uses to connect to the local network, is to open a web browser. and then, enter cloudflare.com in the browser's address bar.

If it fails to load the Cloudflare home page, then enter 1.1.1.1 instead, and try again. If it works, then we know it is related to DNS. If it doesn't then the issue could be your wireless router, as Grant Bennet-Adler has already mentioned.
