Failing to open Files and Documents

Hey all,

Some help needed. I'm stuck.

I have an M1 Mac laptop running Ventura.

I have range of strange issues as of late and can't get to the bottom of them. They are listed below in no particular order and are seemingly completely unlinked but have all started at the same time.

  1. For no apparent reason files downloaded from gmail won't open on my laptop. I am either told the file is corrupt or I don't have the permissions to access it (i'm signed into the the correct gmail account with the permissions to view the files). The type of error depends on if I am trying to use Excel, Adobe PDF or say VLC - as examples. VLC just says the programme has quit unexpectedly. Excel says I don't have permissions and Adobe say the files are corrupt.
  2. If I try to install any programmes (eg, Aspera Connect) the installer says it quits unexpectedly. I have tried this repeatedly and with different applications and nothing seems to run.
  3. I can't get certain files to open (eg. from Affinity designer). I open them as I would normally, the file downloads from I-cloud (where these particular files are stored) and then nothing happens. I've tried all sorts of ways to open them - directly at the file level, through the programme, or dragging the file into the programme. The same files open on an M1 I-pad without issue.
  4. A USB hub just stopped working. HDMI attached screens worked but the audio output would not be recognised as such - so the mini jack attached to the hub would not output sound to the connected device - in this case a mixer.

After some thought, I realised my upgrade to Sonoma may have caused these random problems occurring at once. I re-intalled Ventura and used time-machine to bring back the files. Alas, this has changed nothing.

The next thing I thought was that I had installed a VPN recently (Nord). I have removed this and seemingly I can now open files downloaded from gmail. But not I-cloud. And the Installer issues are still present.

Does anyone have any thoughts what all these random faults have started occurring? Is this pure coincidence or could there be something connecting them - it appears to be relating to files opening and running.

All programmes are running the latest versions although I am still running Ventura. I'm loathed to update until I can resolve these mysterious problems.

Any useful thoughts greatly appreciated.

In addition to SreelCityAnne's good start...

How many things plugged into the USB Hub & does theHub have AC power or just Bus Power?

Start with this if M1, M2, or M3 Mac...

On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.

Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.

Select a volume.

Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.

The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Restart normally.

VPN s really bad.

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

Hi there ,

💻 Wow ! You have been doing some serious homework , yeah ? It's a lot to digest ,

so I'll keep this short . I'm not well versed on Aspera Connect but I do have two points to mention .

🪜 The update to Sonoma … … updates are meant for enhancement , considering the volume of your problems , I'm doubtful that the update is the cause . A lot of installing and uninstalling took place and it appears that you have a boatload of productivity applications .

🪳 Additionally , somebody posted in the IBM forum that there was a bug in Ventura

13.3 with file names . 13.4 is the solution though you're beyond that .

Since I don't fully understand all that you wrote , I took the liberty of fetching you a user guide . With so many issues I felt really bad for you and wanted to contribute something .

Here is the link for the guide ~

I sincerely hope that you will have it straightened out soon . And your post is a good example of how to write one ~ the details , flow of information and decent spelling and grammar are much appreciated ! It helps us help you .

🥀
