Files not opening properly on Mac
Hello,
I have some serious problems opening some files on my M1 Pro Macbook Pro lately. The issue happens like this:
- I double-click on a file in finder (usually .docx .pdf or .psd)
- the default opening App launches
- the file is not opened and the App just sits on the home page (Microsoft Word, Apple Preview or Adobe Photoshop)
Now the weird part – this happens only for SOME files. Some have this problem and some open perfectly fine as they are supposed to. I tried to find a pattern of which files can be opened properly and which ones will not open, but it seems like it does whatever it wants...
Things I found out:
- all the files and folders have all the permissions and privilages set to Read & Write
- I tried to restart the Mac and even shut it down and settle over night -> it didn't help
- I tried to open the file in different apps and it does not open
- format of the file does not play a role in whether it will have this issue or not (e.g. some .docx are opened completely fine with Word, other do not open, just launch the app's home page)
- the date of creation of the file does not play any role too (some are very old, some are very recent and still some of both have this issue, others don't)
- version of the program/app that created the file does not play any role either (files created in the exact same version on the exactly same device suffer from this issue, but some are fine)
- I tried to send the "corrupted" files to a friend and he had no problem with opening them
- origin of the file does not play any role (I tried to open files from many different devices and again – some can be opened, others can't)
- licence of my programs/apps opening the files are all valid, completely fine
- I checked whether the files open on different screen (or virtual desktop) -> negative
- I checked the double-click speed in settings -> everything is as it should
- I once managed to "cure" a file by just moving it from a folder to Desktop -> it then could be opened completely fine and moving it back to the exactly same folder didn't "corrupt" it back (the file opens normally, as it's supposed to)
- when you open a file, it has an opening animation (the icon pops and fades) and it does so immediately, but when I try to open the corrupted files, this animation is delayed and happens after few seconds
- I tried to open the corrupted files directly from the app and this happens: Adobe Photoshop and Preview open the files, but Microsoft Word does not -> it shows an error saying: "Cannot open <file name>. This document has been deleted or isn't available right now."
I have no idea what is happening and why is it happening. It's really annoying and I couldn't find any solution to it. I tried to describe the problem as well as I could and if it seems like bs, that's because it is.
Any idea of why is it happening and how can I fix this?
