AirPrint still not working after seven months

I have not been able to use the AirPrint feature with my iPhone 11 ever since Apple updated iOS to 17 last October/November. Currently, I'm running iOS 17.5.1. I've written to the Apple Community about this beginning last November, and have sporadically called Apple for troubleshooting, but in the end, there's no solution. Each time I tap print, the phone advances to the page that says "No Printer Selected". There have been several updates to iOS since last October and each time, it doesn't affect my problem with AirPrint. My printer is a Samsung Xpress SL-M2875DW. Many iPhone users used to report the same problem to this Community.

When I would call Apple, they used to lay blame on Samsung (now HP), and yet Samsung would tell me there have been no firmware updates, and this is an Apple problem. My daughter used to purposely shun updates to iOS and kept the 16.9 on her iPhone, just so she could continue to make use of AirPrint with my printer whenever she was visiting us. That was the proof that this was an Apple problem. And I know after 7 months and many software updates, that this problem will be solved only with Apple software technicians, and it's more than just elementary 101 troubleshooting with an Apple Rep, i.e., taking out the plug and re-inserting, etc.

So, it's now 7 months and counting. I am reluctant to spend money on a similar printer just because Apple can't provide AirPrint to me. Apple's reaction to my problem is just to wait. But, SEVEN MONTHS.....SO UNLIKE APPLE!!

A Samsung Xpress M2875DW is listed in the May 15, 2025 en-us version of About AirPrint - Apple Support:

"The printersprint servers, and USB-only devices listed here are provided by each manufacturer and updated regularly by Apple."

I guess that it would be correct to assume that you have tested a full power-cycle sequence (including the Wi-Fi router, the printer and all devices/computers), and that a VPN app is not installed/active. Also, that no change can be observed if the printer is wired by Ethernet to one of the LAN ports of the router (instead of using a wireless printer connection).

The replies by Techguyuk in the following discussion point to at least one conceivable workaround, if necessary.

Can’t print with iPadOS17 - Apple Community

Another one could possibly be to use an OS X 10.9 Mavericks or later Mac with Printopia (a third-party paid utility) as a print server. This Mac would need compatible printer drivers for the M2875DW (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/samsung-xpress-sl-m2875-laser-multifunction-printer-series/model/16462701).

Samsung Xpress SL-M2875DW, now supported by HP.

The drivers for AirPrint are provided by the printer vendor, and are embedded in the printer firmware.

if you are running the most current firmware, and if a full printer reset does not resolve the issue, and no further updates are offered, then you’re headed for a replacement printer.

There are intermediate host-based AirPrint drivers around for Microsoft Windows and such, if you want to try to keep this printer going and have a Windows box available to host it. There are likely also JetDirect analogs. In practice, host-passthrough printing tends to be more work than most printers are worth.

I was only talking about printer drivers in connection with the Mac utility Printopia (https://www.decisivetactics.com/products/printopia/), as a workaround for iPhone printing if "normal" AirPrint does not work (if updated printer firmware is not available). A server Mac using this utility would require installed (OS X or macOS) printer drivers (for the M2875DW, link above).

I’ve been having similar issues. My old iPhone 11 Pro Max prints fine on the last version of iso16

thia phone as in the iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn’t work on iOS 17.5.1 but did all last year.

I don’t get it but everything else works as in all android phones and my Mac etc.

it even sees the printer and ink levels but as soon as I print about two pages in it says lost connection to printer and it’s no longer there. If I retry printing it’s already setup and ready to go.

it’s a HP envy 7100 series printer and it’s last firmware update was back in 2022

Reset the HP printer network, restart the Wi-Fi router and check its firmware for updates, and test the iPhone printing again.

To reset the printer networking, see page 111 here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05633496.pdf

Set up the printer networking again. If that fails, I’d try a full reset of the printer.

I’d like to provide more detail, but the HP support website is returning HTTP 404 and 504 errors, and hanging, and HP’s Ouroboros is spinning away, on various queries.

Done all that. Still can’t print more than a page at a time. Even a 3 page PDF disconnects on the second or third page claiming printer not found error.

it was purchased in 2021 and latest firmware is from may 2022

You might want to discuss this with HP support, but this printer being abandoned by HP (and Samsung) wouldn’t surprise.

As of today, printed several things in a row, couple times had to reprint to make it work, then it just stopped working completely. Same issues as described elsewhere… Cannot connect, printer gets de-selected, etc. Restarted printer, restarted iPhone, up-to-date iOS printer is a Brother laser that used to work just fine until today. Between air printing issues and almost 20-year-old alarms app having issues with this iOS, it’s extremely frustrating that Apple is dropping the ball on the basics! People still need the basics, Apple!!! Please don’t tell us to just keep digital copies or use other apps for alarms!

Apple isn’t here.

Printers don’t have the greatest reputation, as a product class.

Some printer vendors are better than others, and some are just bad. Brother has been one of the better choices, based on my experience with various vendors’ printer products.

If you want somebody here to look into your particular printer, please post the printer vendor (apparently Brother?) and the full model name.

If AirPrint printing is not working, also check for printer firmware updates from the printer vendor, and also confirm that the Wi-Fi network is correctly configured and operating, and is relatively free from interference.
