this has been happening to me for years across multiple OS updates. I'm on Sonoma now but it occurred in the last 3 OS iterations.

The only reason I use MAIL is because apple fixes all of my spelling mistakes via Text Replacements otherwise I would have bailed years ago :)

Hey Apple:

  • your search functionality is terrible - always has. We all have to go to GMAIL and do our searches because apple mail is useless for search.
  • Please make a deal with Google and get your app to play nice with GMAIL. I have 4 addresses for work and personal. 3 are GMAIL. I want to use MAIL for all but can't.
  • fix these bugs

thank you

Firstly, ensure that your Mail app is up to date. Sometimes, issues like this can be resolved with software updates from Apple that address bugs and performance issues.

Next, try resetting the column widths in Apple Mail. You can do this by going to the "View" menu in the Mail app and selecting "Use Column Layout" and then "Reset". This will reset the column widths to their default settings.

If the issue persists, you can try rebuilding your mailbox in Apple Mail. To do this, go to the "Mailbox" menu, select "Rebuild", and then choose the mailbox you're experiencing issues with. Keep in mind that this process may take some time, especially if you have a large mailbox.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a more complex issue with your Mail app or your system configuration. In this case, you may want to consider reaching out to Official Apple Support for further assistance.

Thanks, those are some of the basic steps to take, to be sure. And as an Apple trained tech, having previously run a repair station at my college, were done before contacting support. But complete troubleshooting has gone on directly with Apple support, on numerous occasions, and this persists even through a complete reformat and reinstallation of the OS when upgrading to Ventura, and across different devices and OS versions - and has been reported by other many times. This is not related to the OS, but to the poor UI/UX coding extant in this and other Apple apps, such as iTunes and TextEdit. The level of attention to detail, and actual fixing of problems that have continued through multiple versions and updates has continued to deteriorate in my experience. While still better than WinDOH!s, Apple OS and apps leave much to be desired, especially as they are remade in a way to force users to move content the cloud and to attempt to use a phone UI on a computer.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

By the way, Mail is part of the system and can only be updated when there's a system update.
