Apple Mail loses column width settings

Seems that this is an old problem [Mac mail loses column width settings - Apple Community]. However, for me, it only started with macOS 13.2.

The problem is that Apple Mail does not save the column widths that I set in the "All Inboxes" window. It seems to happen when I logoff and logon again later. It doesn't happen if I quit Mail and re-open.

It's very odd. Why would this start to happen with macOs 13.2 ? Is there a fix ?

Thanks.

Mac mini, macOS 10.13

Hey there Garry Brooke,

We aren't able to answer why this would happen after updating to macOS 13.2. What we can do is see how we can help by confirming more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that this occurs only when logging out/in to your user account, but did this occur the first time you did that after updating to macOS 13.2, or did it happen a while afterwards? If it occurred a while afterwards, when did it first start?
  2. If you test for this same issue while in safe mode, does the issue remain? What about when you restart your Mac normally afterwards? How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
  3. To test for this in a new user, check out the steps under 'Add account' here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac Let us know the results from testing this in that new user.

Cheers!

Thanks for these suggestions. I can't see a pattern yet.

The symptom is that columns are squeezed – they are much narrower than what I set for them. Sometimes, the "Subject" column is 20% the width of what I set. The "Date Received" column is maybe 50% of what I set and the "Mailbox" column maybe 75%. But, the "From" and "Attachment" columns are not affected at all. But, the others are much narrower than my settings

I always power off my Mac at night and so do a cold boot in the morning. When I open Apple Mail, sometimes just one column is squeezed e.g. the "Date Received" column. That is rare – usually, more columns are squeezed.

This problem is minor compared to another I have in which Apple Mail erases nearly all messages stored in Rubbish. I have set all accounts to never erase but, still, Mail just erases every message up to a few days ago – every month. I have checked lots of settings in both Apple Mail and the various WebUIs available for my accounts (Gmail; Yahoo; iCloud). That problem affects all accounts. And in the last few days, Mail has started showing more and more "Bin" mailboxes under "On My Mac". First it was 2, then 4, now 5 – one for each email account. I am seriously frustrated with such misbehaviour. Column width misbehaviour is just a minor nuisance in comparison. Frankly, I'm not convinced spending hours to try to diagnose the column widths issue is worth my time.
