Deleted Gmail account on Mac, can't get it back

I had ransomware on my Mac; was told to shut it down, look for any updates, delete cookies and delete my personal Gmail account. Can't get my Gmail to open with the Mail icon on Mac. It's OK with my iPhone and iPad. I go through Internet Acts, Add Account, select Google and verify it's me through phone. Then I get error 400, and spinning on another box.

Have spent hours trying to get this to work. Tried changing to IMAP from POP; my default browser is Safari.

If all else fails, do I call Apple? Are there actually any humans at Google that'd pick up the phone? HELP! Please!
