Removing a deleted gmail account from iPhone mail account list

I have an iPhone that is linked to a deleted gmail account. When I go to Settings-Mail-Account, everything is grayed out except selecting Gmail. When I click on it, it says, “There was a problem accessing your account. Please re-enter the password for [your deleted gmail account].” When I try to re-enter the account information, it says, “Couldn’t find your Google Account”. Not surprising since it is deleted. What can I do to remove it from the device without logging into it since that is no longer something I am able to do?

My goal is to delete the defunct gmail account and add a new email account, neither of which it seems I can do using the suggested methods I’ve seen since it is stuck on logging in to a non-existent account.
