Universal Control not Working. "add display" and "linked keyboard and mouse" options are not visible on MacBook Pro OS Sonoma

I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING

I'm trying to connect my Macbook Pro to my iPad Pro to use Universal Control and, it is not working.

there is no 'plus icon' in the display settings to add a screen
when I use a cord to hook up both devices, the plus icon appears but can only be used as an extended display or mirror display (that is not what I want)
there is no option to use the iPad as a "linked keyboard and mouse."
(even with the cord)

I have rebooted, restarted, put devices to sleep, logged out of iCloud, used the option key, put on and off the required settings etc. and NOTHING.

HELP!

SOLVED:

by Forgetting my wi-fi network on iPad (reconnect wi-fi again) and then it suddenly worked.

hello,

I have experienced this issue personally as well. I am currently using a Macbook Air 2018 (intel) and an Ipad Air 5th gen (M2). Tried Reina's method of force quitting universal control and unchecking handoff but to no avail.

As a last resort I have logged out of my Apple ID on both my Mac and Ipad, then relogged back in. Thankfully this had worked!

turned off everything in dispaly advanced settings and restarted then removed cloud from both devices.

then signed in and choose not to merge data from cloud. had Bluetooth on and display adv settings on after the restart.

This worked for me as well using a Macbook Pro 2020 (M1) and MakbookPro 2020 (M1 Pro), both running Sonoma 14.5!

good news.

i fixed the issue.

Go to Activity Monitor. Search for Universal Control. Force Quit it.
Go to Display. Click Advanced Settings. Uncheck all options
Go to Handoff. Uncheck it.
Put Mac to sleep for the entire night.
next morning - recheck all unchecked options

VUALA ... WORKS!

I've had this for years now, it works for a bit, then stops working and nothing can bring it back other than sighing out of icloud and signing back in, I don't know why this is so difficult for Apple to fix once and for all. I spent weeks with Apple support trying to diagnose this to no avail.
