2023 MacBook Pro M3 Max 16" HDMI Connector is flakey

My 2023 MacBook Pro M3 Max 16" constantly has problems with the HDMI Port loosing contact with the HDMI cable and the external monitor going blank. This happens with even the slightest movement when it's in my lap and seems to have happened while on the desk too. I've purchased and tried several different HDMI cables (and monitors) and had the same problem. I visited the Genius Bar and the Genius showed me that several of the MacBook Pros on the showroom floor had the exact same loose connection. She said that Apple probably didn't intend for the MacBook Pro to be moved when it was connected to HDMI. I love this machine but this problem is not fun and I just literally had to use gaffer's tape to hold the HDMI cable in my $4,000 machine. BTW, we also noticed a factory defect a slight chip in the black area of the screen that I hadn't noticed before.

Which model do you have? It was a known issue for the m1 16 inch mac and the exact same for my m3 16 inch max. It’s not an issue with the other models.

HDMI cable could be made of gold and diamonds and it would still come out easily.

You wouldn’t be so arrogant if you actually saw what happens. Do a simple google search of the initial models.

Known issue buddy.

I have not personally had any issue getting high-spec HDMI cables to stay in place. But this issue may not be so rare as I expected.

You can now buy cables that have an Increased Retention Connector (IRC) HDMI connector like this one:

Note the metal retention tabs on the sides. I was sent such a cable in a routine FIOS set-top box upgrade kit.

HDMI cables you want for HDMI-only Displays (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet"  --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard 720p TV set, and not much more.

HDMI was invented for HD TV sets. it works great at its original resolution of 720i or 720p. At higher resolutions, it quickly develops issues that are complex to solve, and the cables and adapters required to solve are NOT intuitive.

You may find a high spec cable has fewer issue falling off the connector.
