New MacBook Pro 16” HDMI port issue

I just took delivery of the brand new MacBook Pro 16” M1 Pro. I plugged an HDMI cable in and found it to be wobbly enough that it would cause intermittent stability. The base of the plug sits a couple millimeters from the body. I tried other brand cables with the same wobbly result. It’s not that the internal port is wobbly, but the fact that you can’t push the plug all the way in. Took it to the apple store. They of course were very helpful but seemed to be the first time they had seen this. They tried other plugs and other MacBook pros. All had the same issue. It’s a design flaw. Any current HDMI cable will not fit snugly into the housing. They had no solution but to say I should address it for feedback. Although they did suggest that I maybe use scotch tape to hold it in. This photo is with the cable pushed all the way in. Btw the port works. You just can’t keep the computer in your lap as it will wiggle and lose the connection.

I can confirm this is indeed an issue, I have the same problem with my 16" MacBook Pro. Even though I have it sitting still on my desk the video is periodically dropping out and then back in. One thing I tried was switching to a USB-Type c to HDMI 2.0 cable, but when you do that you lose HDR capability.

This is so Apple... They will never admit they screwed up, and despite spending thousands of dollars, we'll have to live this design defect.

I appreciate your continued dedication to "everyone is wrong except apple" but your argument is seriously flawed.

  1. You don't have the new macbook pro 16 yourself so you're just assuming your argument.
  2. Considering the new mackbook pro 16 only started shipping in the last 2 weeks, I doubt there are a "flood" of new $4000 computer buyers.
  3. Even with that "flood' of new computers there are only a very small percentage that will have used the least used port on computer.
  4. Therefore the sample size will be incredibly small at this stage.
  5. Please show me the "flood" of users who are happy with their new HDMI port. (Remember, the forum can't be older than 2 weeks)
  6. Apple has been in touch with me. They know it is an issue.

Cheers, keep up the good fight.

Thanks I appreciate the alternatives but honestly I’m not looking for a solution...Merely pointing out an issue that will inevitably be fixed one way or another.

Just a side note- Apple doesn't read these forums, aside from the hired support staff to manage it and provide help in certain circumstances. If you want Apple to see it, you have to submit feedback here. It will be read, but, you will likely not receive a reply.

I understand your frustration, but I'm afraid there's nothing we can do. We're not Apple employees- we're just end users like you volunteering our time to help others out.

As every MacBook and every HDMI cable tried seemed to interact in the same way, there's nothing that can be done about it (besides submitting feedback). Your options are essentially to tape it in or get a different computer.

Alternatively, if you really need the cord to fit snugly, you could buy a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter like this, plug that into one of your Mac's Thunderbolt ports, then plug the HDMI cable into the adapter. I've used these cables, and can say that they fit quite well.

I took a look at some of the HDMI ports and cables I had on hand.

All of the ones I have are retained in the socket with a modest, but not negligible force. This appears to be provided by two small metal tabs inside the jack, which clink into the two small square holes on the underside of the HDMI plug, providing that modest retention force.

This may not be a problem with the Jack on the MacBook Pro, but rather a problem with the plug-end of your specific cable. I Thing you should compare and contrast other cables and other Video equipment with HDMI jacks, such as your TV set is you have one.

I think you may need to re-examine the situation after investing in some better quality cables.

Huh? MacBook Pro 14" and 16" M1 Pro were released in October 2021. There are now millions of these puppies in people hands. For sure, they didn't start shipping two weeks ago.

I have no skin in this game however as I have no use for HDMI on my 16" M1 Pro. Just thought you'd like to know these devices have been out for months.
