Why does Siri respond rudely with uh-huh and hmmm?

Ask Siri a question and get a rude response. It happens every time, and Apple has made no effort to change it despite hundreds of comments that I've seen personally. So I no longer use Siri on any of my devices, problem solved. 🤣🤣🤣

Siri will ONLY respond with uh huh, if you pause after calling Siri's name.

Example: Hey Siri........................................Uh Huh? Then you ask your question

Instead, do NOT pause after waking Siri.

Example: Hey Siri, what is tomorrow's weather in Sacramento

In the later example, Siri will not say uh huh. It's all about how you speak with Siri. Just like if you tried to ask me a question, but paused after you said my name, I'd like say something like uh huh, to see if you still wanted to ask me something.

It is NOT rude. It's a normal expression, especially when you pause after invoking Siri.

But sure, you don't have to use Siri. That's entirely your choice. And one no one here on this user to user only forum would really be bothered much about.

Unless you are contacting Apple directly (posting here is not doing that) then unfortunately you aren’t continuing to “push “ Apple to do anything. You need to submit feedback if you haven’t already. I’m not a fan of the change…which has been occurring for a few years now but at the end of the day…your requirements as far as how responses are provided (from Siri or from a person) isn’t something that makes it mandatory. In general, speech by humans well before AI, text messages, etc has had casual communication exist that doesn’t fit into formal norms (opting to say yeah versus yes, hey instead of hello, huh….and so on). Perhaps the intent is for Siri to be less of a formal feature. Who knows. Either way, like I mentioned before, contact Apple directly to submit feedback. Wanting Siri to speak in a more formal manner is a preference but isn’t an indicator of you being a more “intelligent human being” than those that aren’t as bothered by the more casual responses. I don’t love it but I’m also not deeply offended or anything. So if the change ever came I wouldn’t be upset. If it never happens I won’t be upset either.

Ways around it though would be to not pause when using Siri. Ask your question or state your command as a fluid statement versus saying Siri and waiting for a response before continuing. You can also opt to manually start Siri by pressing the side button until the Siri animation pops up on the screen (which of course isn’t helpful if you need to use the feature hands free at the moment). It doesn’t fix the irritation with the way Siri responds of course but it at least eliminates having to hear the less formal “uh huh” and “hmm”. Oh…and if you naturally tend to pause a bit before continuing your sentences/questions you could try changing the Siri Pause Time setting to longer or longest to see if that helps (not sure if it does but theoretically you could continue your natural pause in speech and then continue before Siri attempts to respond with the “uh huh”. This is assuming that you don’t also need to hear an acknowledgment before you complete your request).

I didn’t think it was rude when Siri said uh huh. In fact, I liked it. Since I updated to IOS 17- Siri says nothing unless I ask a question. It was so helpful when it answered- made it easier to keep track of my phone plus I knew I had summoned it. Now I have to look to see if it heard me. I don’t like this change at all.

That's odd. On my iPhone 15 Pro Max on iOS 17.4, I just said "Hey Siri" then paused, and Siri said Uh Huh as it has for some time. I too don't mind it at all. It's conversational. If someone calls my name and then doesn't say anything I too will often say Uh Huh to them.

Not sure if you're the one who claimed it's not rude, but it is rude. It's a part of the abbreviated conversations and language that now take place in our society largely due to AI, text, messages, etc. I still require a yes or a no and I will continue to push Apple to make a change. Yes, it is my choice as a consumer and as an intelligent human being.

I agree. Siri’s rudeness is a continual annoyance for me.

I wish Apple would at least make a “polite” or “formal” setting for how Siri speaks.

What really gets me is that when you click on a pop-up option in the Mobile OS you don’t have an option to just say “no “, you have to click a button that says “no thanks“. So Apple clearly understands manners and politeness when they’re obligating you to speak to the machine. However, when the machine speaks to you, it’s the rudest with Siri.

Even worse, if you take care of kids, the kids start speaking like Siri does and now you got rude kids
