I've always watched Paramount content through Apple TV, but now when I try to watch I'm told I need the Paramount+ app — which then tells me I have no existing subscription. When did this change? Do I need to cancel my subscription and start a new one with Paramount?

That's exactly what I'm saying too. I wasn't just trying to use the Paramount app; I was forced to download it because the content wouldn't play in the Apple TV channel, which had never happened before.
You need to explain exactly how you are trying to watch whatever it is you are trying to watch. What exactly are you doing?
If you subscribe through the Paramount+ channel inside the Apple TV app, then you can only watch content through there. You cannot watch content by selecting the Paramount+ app option. Only within the Paramount+ channel unless you verify your channel subscription with Paramount+ directly. Then you can use it with the App too.
What are you clicking on exactly?
I'm using the Apple TV app to watch (Survivor, in this case) — but a screen pops up saying I need the Paramount+ app to watch, with a download button. Once there after downloading, the sign-in screen has a spot at the bottom saying "Purchased through iTunes? Restore purchase" — which then says "Restore Failed, No existing subscription found."
Yes, as I said, if you are using the Apple TV channel subscription, you cannot use the stand alone app, unless you verify your channel subscription on the Paramount+ website.
You should not be trying to watch it on the stand alone app, but rather in the Paramount+ channel inside the Apple TV app if that is where you are subscribed.
They are different subscriptions.
Its possible the content is not available directly on the Apple TV app channel, and that's why it directs you to the App.
As I posted above, you can verify your channel subscription at the Paramount+ website so it can also be used on the stand alone app.
