How to reduce space between bookmarks items in safari on MacOS?

The bookmarks items in the bookmarks bar of safari on MacOS are extremely far from each other resulting in a lot of unused space. And I cannot see all my bookmarks, while on Chrome I even have space left. Is there a way to reduce the margin around the items?

Items could be much closer and the ˇ symbol is redundant, since the folder-symbol already indicates that it is a folder that can be opened. So ˇ can be removed from the bar.
