Okay, thank you for the EtreCheck report. It indicates that the AVG antivirus app is installed on the system. Mac OS does not require nor does it benefit in any way by installing third party:
Most, have the exact opposite effect that users want. They make Mac OS slow, appear buggy (much like what you are currently experiencing!) and offer absolutely nothing in return.
Please locate AVG's uninstall procedures which state:
Then restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally and test the computer. If you want to continue having problems with Mac OS, leave AVG installed.
To keep Mac OS in great shape, please keep it up-to-date and restart the computer about 1x per week. Other than that just leave it alone!
I followed your advice on 'Fix corrupted Contacts database' but the problem persists. it happens with any list, at some stage in the process (eg choosing which fields or changing paper size). As I mentioned, it happens with all three Apple silicon Macs in our household on Sonoma 14.1.1
Anyway, many thanks for trying to help. I'll just have to hope it gets fixed in future updates.
First thing to try is a simple restart however if you going to do that then you should do a restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally and then test it.
If that does not work, please do the following:
It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. Well AVG is gone. I'm not sure why it hangs when it trys to print a contacts list. Are you referring to all contacts lists or just one specific list? One thing you can try is Fix corrupted Contacts database and see if that helps.
Thanks for the advice. I uninstalled AVG, restarted in safe mode etc but the problem persists. It also occurs on another iMac (M1 version) and a MacBookAir (M2) in our household so it clearly seems to be a bug in Apple's Contacts app.
Please post a fresh EtreCheck report so we can take another look. AVG and other AV apps many times have a nasty habit of staying installed even after you uninstall them. I want to look for any evidence of that possibility.
Mac OS is stable in most cases the reason it becomes unstable is due to users errors.
Okay,
I looked through your last EtreCheck report again and noticed:
CS5ServiceManager.plist that means that Adobe CS5 was never fully uninstalled. Please locate that .plist file using Finder (or you can download and use the FindAnyFile app) and delete that file and empty the Trash.
In addition, the report said: "Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. These files could be old, incompatible, and cause problems. They should be reviewed." What this means is you have some old third party apps installed that have not been kept up-to-date. I would recommend going through your library of third party apps and updating them and if you have some that you no longer use, uninstall them. These can be causing conflicts.
After you have done this also please run Malwarebytes to see if you have any malware installed which could also be a cause. Finally, if updating the third party apps and cleaning any malware does not help then your next step is to boot into the Recovery partition and install Mac OS. What this type of install does is to fill in any missing or damaged portions of Mac OS. It will not affect your data however it is always wise to ensure you have a full backup of your system prior to doing any install.

I worked through your suggestions short of re-installing MacOS but the problem persisted even through a couple of updates to Mac OS. I was about to boot to Recovery and re-install when I discovered that, following the recent update to Sonoma 14.3.1, the problem has disappeared - similarly on my wife's iMac.
Thanks again for your help.
Many thanks for your suggestions, which I will work through.
