In CONTACTS, "Edit > Remove from List" is inaccessible; and using the Delete key doesn't work

In Contacts (MacOS 13.6.3 / Ventura) a contact entry in a List *cannot* be removed by highlighting it and pressing the delete key. The advice in this posting doesn't work remove contact from list - Apple Community

Moreover, "Edit > Remove from List" is grayed out and inaccessible, despite the contact being highlighted.

Tried dragging a contact entry out of the list but that doesn't work either.

My use case is printing mailing labels from a List that is a subset within Contacts.

p.s. As a workaround, I deleted the postal address (which was wrong), leaving no address, and label printing skipped that contact.
