Upgrade your Notes? iCloud upgrade?

For the first time I am trying to share (receive) a Note from another person. (FWIW, I'm using an iPhone SE 2nd Gen, iOS 16.1.1)

Up to this time I have used Notes on my iPhone (just on my iPhone) without any problems. Now, for sharing, I enabled Notes in Settings > iCloud > Show All > Notes. All seemed fine.

But when I try to open the Note that my trainer texted to me I get the following message:

Upgrade Your Notes

To open shared notes, you'll need to

upgrade your iCloud account.

Does this mean I have to upgrade to a PAID iCloud plan (iCloud+) just to share Notes?

I went ahead and accepted the "upgrade." It appeared to be an update to the Notes app itself, not iCloud, despite the message about upgrading my iCloud account. Maybe it was some sort of flag to enable shared Notes.

After that, I was able to open the shared Note.

I can’t find any requirement for that but I suspect your trainer is on iOS17 and that may be the problem.

It doesn’t say upgrade your storage plan.

Good to know.

Maybe updating to 16.7.2 should have been my first recommendation. I just looked at the “16”, but a lot of features were introduced or upgraded in 16.2 and later.

I'll be going to iOS 17 in the next few weeks. But first I have to update my wife's Mac & iPhone. She has been very patient.
