Safari only works on Wi-Fi after iOS17 update.

After updating my iPhone 13 from iOS 16 to iOS 17, Safari only works on Wi-Fi. It will not work on mobile data. I put my phone on airplane mode, did a hard power reset, & updated to the latest iOS 17 patch updates. So far I’ve only found this old post where someone had a similar issue:

I tried all the suggestions there but I’m still having issues. Anyone else experiencing this after the latest iOS update?

Hello BrianK90, thanks for your reply.

I apologize for not including that additional information in my original post. Yes, other apps as well as other browsers like DuckDuckGo and Google Chrome work on cellular. I am also able to send iMessages and data across cellular. The problem seems to only be within Safari.

My phone model and sim remain the same. The only change was updating my iOS to the new 17. It is a work phone and we are on ATT’s FirstNet (FirstNet 55.0). My coworkers in my department are on the same model and iOS but I appear to be the only one with this problem.

Hey AlaskanAvalanche,

Those are some excellent steps you took on your own already. Have you also tried other apps while you're connected to your cellular network? Other apps that requires a network connection other than Safari. We want to make sure this issue isn't coming from your cellular network.

Also, let's make sure we have your carrier settings updated:

Manually update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

1. Make sure that your device is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
2. Tap Settings > General > About.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install your carrier update.

If you set up a new eSIM or insert a new SIM card into your iPhone or iPad, you might need to download the carrier settings for your new carrier.

To see the version of carrier settings on your device, tap Settings > General > About and look next to Carrier. To see additional carrier information, tap the version number. To verify that you have the latest carrier settings installed, contact your carrier.

We hope this helps!

Best regards.

Hi AlaskanAvalanche,

Have you checked the Mobile Data setting for Safari as suggested in the post you referenced? From the support article View or change cellular data settings on iPhone those steps are:

"Set cellular data use for apps and services

Go to Settings  > Cellular, then turn Cellular Data on or off for any app (such as Maps) or service (such as Wi-Fi Assist) that can use cellular data.

If a setting is off, iPhone uses only Wi-Fi for that service.

Note: Wi-Fi Assist is on by default. If Wi-Fi connectivity is poor, Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to cellular data to boost the signal. Because you stay connected to the internet over cellular when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection, you might use more cellular data, which may incur additional charges depending on your data plan. See the Apple Support article About Wi-Fi Assist."

Is yours set to enabled, or changing as that post described?

It's also worth checking into VPN or security software settings to determine if there are any impacts specifically to Safari if you use either of those options. Consider also if you use About iCloud Private Relay disabling that temporarily for testing purposes.

Regards.

Hello Bill_T1,

Thanks for joining the conversation. Yes, I did try toggling the cellular data off and on for Safari in settings. I tried it again just now for good measure (Since I’m now up to date on iOS 17.0.3).

My cellular data settings are enabled. When I toggle it off for Safari it remains off until I toggle it on. Then it remains on. So seems my issue is slightly different than that other post.

I do not use a VPN nor security software. But I do use Private Relay. I will disable that temporarily and update on results.
