when i went to check my storage it says it’s full but with applications. apparently i have 45 applications? what are applications?

i cannot upload the latest software because I need more storage. I checked after deleting many, many, many recipes thinking that would solve the problem but, no! I delved in further and discovered I have a disproportional amount of “Applications”. What are Applications and how do I get rid of some of them?
