applications storage

I don't understand why my applications storage is so much since I do not have 200+ gigs of downloaded stuff.

It ll jump from 5 to 212 but in the HD stay the same. Any reason why?

The first thing to understand is those values are the result of a Spotlight search.

Second, the Application storage is not only the size of the applications, but also the size of the data created by the applications--i.e., your files.

Third, all of those categories may overlap.

So, initially, Spotlight only found 5.2GB of Applications--probably just the apps. As the search continues, more data is identified as belonging to an Application.

I don't understand why "200+ gigs of downloaded stuff" is important to this question.
