Prior to installing Sonoma, I searched a date (such as today's date) and it would pull up all photos in my photo library taken on that date in date order, oldest first (2004 - 2023). That no longer works. I enter October 5, and I get miscellaneous October photos with newest first. How do I regain the capability to view the way I used to?

If you've recently updated it is probable that search functionality is still indexing in the background.
Give it a couple of days and then check again. If the search functionality is not returned, try rebuilding the Spotlight index on your Mac. This is a system wide search tool that impacts most search functions for apps on your Mac.
