Since Sonoma upgrade Safari menus no longer work

Since upgrading to Sonoma, when I launch Safari I can browse and use any buttons in the Safari application window, but none of the Safari menus on the menu bar work. When I select a menu item, I get a dropdown but can't select anything.

The only way I can quit Safari is CMD-OPTION-DELETE and then terminating Safari, which does terminate normally.

This isn't a huge deal as I can easily switch to another browser but am wondering if anyone else is having this happen.

I've had no issues in Sonoma with the menu bar in any other applications or in Finder. I'm not running any Safari or menu bar extensions.

Thanks

Parallels, macOS 10.14

  1. Safe Mode: Boot your Mac into Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key during startup). This will start your Mac with the minimum number of extensions, drivers, and other software. If the issue doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it might be related to some third-party software or extension. Restart normally to exit Safe Mode.
  2. Test in a New User Account: Create a new user account on your Mac and check if Safari behaves the same way in the new account. If it doesn't, the problem might be related to preferences or other files in your primary user account.
  3. Clear Safari Cache: Sometimes, clearing Safari's cache might help:
    • From the menu bar, select Safari > Preferences.
    • Click on the Advanced tab.
    • Check the box at the bottom that says "Show Develop menu in menu bar."
    • From the new Develop menu in the menu bar, select Empty Caches.
  1. Disable Safari Extensions (if worked in the Safe Mode): Extensions might interfere with Safari's operation:
    • Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions.
    • Disable all extensions.
    • Restart Safari and see if the problem persists. If it's resolved, re-enable extensions one-by-one until you identify the problematic one.
