Safari in Sonoma not refreshing page with Cmd+R

I am experiencing problems using Cmd+R to reload a page in Safari with the latest version of Sonoma.

E.g. Thurrott.com - if I haven't been to the page for a couple of days and do Cmd+R, it reloads the page in the state it was in at the time I last visited the site, it doesn't actually reload the site with the current content.

If I open a new tab, it loads the latest content propery.

If I go into the address bar and re-type the URL, it loads the latest content properly.

If I click on the Thurrott logo, it loads the latest content properly.

This happens with other sites as well.

This is with Sonoma 14.0 (23A344), no updates available on a Mac mini M1 and a MacBook Air M1, German language installation.

Hi Bill_T1, that is the problem, the Command-R doesn't refresh the page, it just reloads the old content - i.e. refresh from cache, doesn't get data from the server. Forcing a refresh(Shift-Command-R) or by leaving the page and coming back or re-entering the URL solves the problem.

This is on Safari on multiple Macs running the latest Sonoma public release.

Hello wright-is,

For difficulties with Safari, you'll want to take the additional steps below:

  1. Check Safari extensions
  2. Test with a private window
  3. Check Safari settings
  4. Check iCloud Private Relay
  5. Check VPN or other security software
  6. Check network settings

You can find more details on each of those steps in this resource: If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac - Apple Support

Should that behavior persist with just a specific website, you'll want to reach out to the website developer.

If this is occurring with multiple websites, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this further.

Take care.

Hi wright-is,

From the support article If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac is the following:

"Reload the page

From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload Page. Or press Command-R.

If Safari doesn't reload the page, quit Safari, then try again. If Safari doesn't quit, you can press Option-Command-Esc to force Safari to quit.

If Safari automatically reopens unwanted pages, quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. Learn how to control which windows Safari automatically reopens."(emphasis added)

Try reloading the page with the reload icon (if you don't have that icon you can add it to the toolbar via the steps in Customize the Safari browser window on Mac) or View > Reload page and if still unsuccessful quit Safari and reopen it, noting the option to reload with the Shift key held to force Safari to clear saved-state data.

Regards.
