Up/down arrow page scroll in Safari not working

Using Safari version 17.0, OS Sonoma 14.0:

I want to use the up and down arrows to scroll up and down on a webpage in Safari.

This no longer works right away. If I open keyboard settings, click around, it seems to work--but not by selecting any new option, etc. I didn't do anything to turn this function off. If I can get it to work during one session and then I turn off the computer, it won't work again.

Thank you for the reply. I just got it to work....but seemingly by doing nothing. And it won't last.

Scenario: I open Safari. Load webpage. Depressing up/down keys sends me to the top of the webpage.

Next step: I open the Keyboard Viewer. Using my cursor, I hover over the virtual keyboard up/down key. Using trackpad, I click the up/down key, and the webpage scrolls up/down as expected. I close the virtual keyboard, and the physical up/down keys now work as expected in Safari. Works in a new private Safari window as well now.

This series of steps happens every time I turn off and then turn back on the computer. As in, when I turn off my computer, turn it back on, the physical up/down keys do not function as scroll in Safari. How can I make this fix stick?

Hello simpletasks,

As explained in this support article (Keyboard shortcuts and gestures in Safari on Mac - Apple Support), there are no specific steps you need to take to enable arrow key scrolling on your Mac.

Have you possibly created some Mac keyboard shortcuts that use those arrow keys, which may be overriding the commands?

If neither of those articles help to resolve this behavior, we advise that you restart your Mac (Shut down or restart your Mac) and make sure it's fully updated (Update macOS on Mac). Once those are done, please test this issue.

We hope this helps. Let us know if we can assist with anything else at all. Take care.

Hi simpletasks,

We appreciate you for providing us that update. Our recommendation is to restart your Mac in safe mode. This is a step that helps to clear out some system caches and more. Once the Mac is in safe mode, please restart it as normal and test Safari in your user account to see if that helps. If needed, here's a support article on how to restart a Mac in safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If that doesn't help, the next step is to contact Apple Support as they can investigate this further. You can contact them by using this link here: Get Support

Kind regards.
