Messages hanging/crashing on iPhone

This issue affects my iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 16.6). Messages will simply hang and then crash. It has been happening off and on for months, but lately it has been a lot more consistent. I have tried force quitting Messages and restarting my iPhone. The latter step sometimes provides a short-term fix, but it always reverts back to hanging and crashing. I thought maybe the Messages data had gotten too big, so I set it to auto-delete old messages and reduce disk space; didn't help one bit. Just wondering whether anyone else has seen this (other than this person), or if anyone has new suggestions to help (short of a factory reset, hopefully). Thank you!

You've done some great troubleshooting so far.

Since that behavior still persists, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this further.

I am having the same issue now. I waited 1 hour at the Apple Store for someone to reboot my phone and it worked for 5 minutes. I am back home with exactly the same issue. I deleted thousand of messages and it did not help. Someone else in y family is having the same issue. We must be millions and ignored at large.

Very disappointed by the product and the service. Will likely take it to 5 other SM platforms if not resolved in the next 2 days.
