AirPods Pro battery drains when not in use

I have very lightly used my AirPods Pro over the last year or so and this issue has been plaguing me to the point that I just avoid them because I cannot trust they'll work when I need them. I use them with an iPhone X and sometimes a MacBook Pro or iPad Air 4.

I'll use the AirPods for listening to music or a phone call, and then when I put them in the fully-charged case, the battery keeps draining from the AirPods and eventually this completely drains the case battery. This happened yesterday. The case and AirPods were fully charged, I used them for about an hour phone call, put them back in the case, and at 10pm, the AirPods and case were completely dead. Charging them for 15 hours, the case appears to be fully charged, but the AirPods or only at 83%, which makes me wonder if they're still "on" and draining the battery. None of my devices show them as connected.

I'm meticulous about cleaning the case and AirPods before putting them back. Most of the time I look for the blinking light confirmation that it recognizes the AirPods are back in the case. I do have XCode open most of the time on my laptop, so there's a chance that's related. This has happened regularly across the last two firmware versions as well as multiple iOS and MacOS versions on my devices.

This problem does not happen consistently, but it does about every third or fourth use.

Any advice? Thanks

Yyyyyyuppers! Same here, to the point that it feels like I’m troubleshooting more than enjoying my AirPod Pros. I just fixed it a couple of charge cycles back then lone behold today, sitting in the case on my desk (in front of me) and not in use, I’ve lost 10% from the case.

It’s nothing you, me, or anyone else is doing because it’s a software issue as Apple seems to fix it the case drain issue one firmware update only to break it again in the next update.

I also take very good care of my things and I can only clean, drain, forget, reset and re-pair them so many times. I shouldn’t have to develop OCD-like patterns and processes around my Apple products to ensure that they work as advertised. That’s the complete opposite of what I should be doing with my AirPod Pros.

Moral of the story is: I should’ve spent the extra money and went with Bose.

Hey there noodlesworth,

It sounds like you've already taken some great steps. You'll also want to go ahead and reset your AirPods, then check for the same behavior.

How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro

"You might need to reset your AirPods if they won't charge, or to fix a different issue.

  1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
  4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
    • If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
    • If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.
  1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.
  2. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*
  3. AirPods charging cases
  4. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.

AirPods can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use AirPods (3rd generation) or AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation) that someone else has used, they first need to remove the AirPods from their Apple ID.

  • When you reset your AirPods, the settings for your AirPods also reset. You can change your settings again."

Have a good one!
