AirPods Pro discharging when in charging case

My AirPods Pro discharge randomly in the closed case. It will be one side or the other. But one will wind up at 0% while the other is at 100%. They seem to be connecting to Bluetooth even when the case is closed. Although my AirPods are both capable of charging, and normally do just fine, perhaps 1 in every 6 charges results in one of hte AirPods actively discharging while sitting in the charging case. I have done all the available troubleshooting and cleaning. In addition, I took them to the Apple Store because they were still covered by AppleCare. The technicians ran the AirPods Pros through a test and gave me a new pair. Unfortunately, the new pair behaves exactly the same. I returned to the Apple Store and the technicians ran the charging case through a testing device, but determined that the case was fine. Any suggestions? Do I need to check Bluetooth settings after I put the AirPods into their case to make sure they are no longer connected to my iPhone when they are in the case? Thanks!

iPhone X, iOS 16

Mine is doing the same thing. Usually, it is the left earbud but at least once, the right one was doing the same thing.

I notice, with only the discharged earbud in the case, I can move it slightly, right and left, and the amber light on the case will change from green to amber. Because of this, I have to believe, it is a connection problem. Why they would discharge if the connection was not being made, I don't know.

The problem is so bad right now, I cannot count on the earbuds working when I want to use them.

The AirPods Pro first generation, would on occasion also not charge and I had to clean out the case. But they never discharged.

Hi there Red944S2,

Thank you for posting to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that your AirPods Pro are discharging when stored in the case. Is that correct? We're happy to help.

It sounds like you've had great help by having them looked at at the Apple Store. We also recommend keeping iOS up-to-date on your paired device. This will ensure that any firmware updates for the AirPods Pro are updated on them as well.

. Before updating, we recommend backing up your iPhone first. These articles can be of help. When you back up, you can back up using a Mac or PC rather than iCloud if you choose.

Hello Red944S2,

We don't have more suggestions from what was already completed.

Since these were already replaced, the next step is to contact Apple Support, see what options they might have: Get Support

Or make an appointment and have the store check out the replacement. They may see the issue with the case this time, or it's possible one of the replacements has an issue, and needs to be replaced again.

Thanks.

Thanks for replying. Yes, one of my AirPod Pros is discharging when it is in the charging case. The IOS on my iPhone is up to date and a backup is stored on my PC. As I explained, I have already presented this situation to the Apple Store, they ran diagnostics on the charging case, and determined that it was fine, according to the testing program. About two weeks earlier, they ran diagnostics on my AirPods themselves and determined they were defective, so they replaced them under my AppleCare coverage. The replacement AirPods also discharge in the charging case, which is why I returned to the Apple Store and asked them to check the charging case.

Last night, when I placed my AirPods into the charging case, I confirmed that both AirPods were charging, and then confirmed on my iPhone that the AirPods were NOT connected to my iPhone, although I had to manually disconnect the AirPods, even though they were in the charging case. This morning, one AirPod was 100% charged and the other was 0% charged. If you have any suggestions other than actions I have already taken, I would be very appreciative. Thanks!

I have been experiencing the EXACT SAME PROBLEM for the past 3 years.

I take the AirPods to the Apple Store and have a technician test them every single time it happens. So far, I have replaced one/both of the pods EIGHT TIMES! (I often take screenshots showing the discharged pod, to prove that the problem exists.)

I have also replaced the case THREE TIMES!

One particular technician, who seemed a bit more knowledgeable than most, said that this is a known problem caused by bad magnets in the case.

Maybe if enough of us consumers have the tenacity to keep replacing the pods every time this occurs, Apple will eventually be motivated to fix the problem?
