Unable to control the volume of my iPhone when using "Now Playing" on the Apple Watch

I’ve got an Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 13 and my watch can’t control the volume of my phone when using Now Playing on the watch. I can skip songs and pause/play but changing the volume on the watch has no effect on my iPhone’s volume. This happens with multiple apps like Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music.

This solution worked for me. Under watch settings “return to clock” > set all your audio apps to ‘always’ , except now playing (optional).

now playing will recognize all the audio apps playing on your phone and will allow you to control the volume with the crown. It’s the individual apps on the watch face that are creating the issues, and it’s confusing cause they look the same as the now playing face graphic.
