apple watch no longer controls iPhone audio

I loved being able to pause, fast forward 30 seconds or back 15 seconds while listening to apps like Podcasts, NPR and Libby. With the latest apple watch update, the watch will show what I'm listening to, but the controls are gone. I've tried using the Now Playing app, but it doesn't work with those apps.

This function was the main reason I purchased the Apple watch.
