Automatic app updates not working

For a long time now I have apps that I will notice aren’t working correctly and I will have to manually update them, even though I have automatic updates on and notice other apps updating automatically by themselves. Yet I still have to constantly check apps as I notice problems because apps only automatically update randomly. My phone is up-to-date, I shut it off several times recently, and turned it back on, and I rarely leave my house anymore so I’m consistently on my home wifi network. This is getting super frustrating. Why have automatic updates if they aren’t actually going to automatically update?
