16.5.1 Data Issues

I went to the Apple Store today. Turns out my data and Wi-Fi weren’t working because I had VPN on. If you have VPN on turn it off in your settings. Go to Settings > General > VPN and Device Management > Tap the slider to switch off if it’s on. If not call or go into your local Apple Store.

I am having a similar issue on my iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 16.5.1, where I lose all connection once I leave Wi-Fi. I am unable to send SMS, place calls or even use data. I have a case submitted with both Apple and my Carrier and they are both pointing the finger at each other. Both Apple and my Carrier have tried to contact me and I can't call back as I can't place phone calls... the chat functions on the websites don't work with the people I've been talking to... so I am at a stalemate until I find a landline...

After hours on the phone with my Carrier and Apple, one of the Apple Technications said that the software broke something in my phone and I had to get it repaired, they booked me a same day appointment and after an hour with the in-store employee, they couldn't locate anything that was mentioned and just did a full factory reset and set up like new -it has been working like a charm ever since.

I only wonder if I restore from my back up if it will cause the issue again

Occurred just this weekend. After installing security patch I had no wi-fi/network service. I could receive most text messages and phone calls. Tried several recommended steps to correct the problem without success. Spent hours with my carrier and Apple tech support and ended up doing recovery using iTunes - this did not correct the problem. Turned out to be my VPN - apparently recent patch is not compatible with current VPN provider. Been using this VPN for over a year without issue. All problems vanished once VPN deleted from my iPhone. So, if you are having similar problems try removing VPN from your phone - having it turned off is not enough. I sent this information to VPN tech support.

My issues persisted even though I wasn’t using a VPN.

VPN seems to be a common issue as everyone I spoke to asked me to turn it off.
