MacBook Air with Brother DCP-7065DN laser printer - issues

Been using these together for years but recently when I would try to print, I would get the "printer offline" message in the job list. I rebooted the computer, turned the printer off and on, etc. but nothing would change. I figured maybe my printer software had gotten corrupted somehow so tried another software download but nothing changed. So, I decided to properly uninstall the printer and scanner software and start from scratch.

The Brother software shows up properly under Computer:Library:Printers, and the scanner shows up under Computer:Library:Image Capture:Devices/Twain Data Sources. However, when I try to print, no printer is discoverable. When I go to system preferences: Printers&Scanners, nothing shows in the list.

When I connected my Air to the printer thinking maybe it had to be connected for it to see the printer, clicking Printers&Scanners caused the spinning wheel and I had to force quit everything. I rebooted and the same thing happened so I had to force quit again! When I disconnected from the printer and rebooted, Printers&Scanners opened but of course there was no printer discoverable.

What am I missing?

Does the printer's LCD panel show the printer as "Ready" or "Online"? Can you print a test page or demo page using the interface on the physical printer? Even printing a configuration page would confirm the printer is working.

Is selecting AirPrint for the driver possible when adding the printer? If so, then use the AirPrint driver option.

I don't know what drivers Brother is providing for macOS, but it seems like this printer is supported by the CUPS driver. Are you able to select a CUPS driver for this printer? If a CUPS driver is not shown, then you can configure it by launching the CUPS Administration interface by entering the following URL in a web browser:

localhost:631/admin

If this gives an error page, then you will first need to enable the CUPS web interface by launching the Terminal app and entering the following command (pay attention to the uppercase letters, or just copy & paste it into the Terminal window, then press the "Return" key to submit the command):

cupsctl  WebInterface=yes

Now you should be able to access the CUPS web interface using the web browser.

When you click on "Add Printer" button or "Find Printer", it will prompt you to enter a macOS admin user name and password. If your printer is on the same subnet as your Mac, then you should be able to use the "Find Printer" button which may make setup easier (I haven't done this in a long time though). The "Add Printer" option can be a bit tricky when it comes to a network printer (best to use the printer's network name or DNS name since an IP address can change over time).

I went through the process and no printer was found, even though I can find the Brother folder under printers in the library. The printer was able to print a test page. My husband's PC can communicate with it, though our other issue is with the paper feed from the tray, says no paper when there is, but that's another issue with the rollers or something I need to troubleshoot.

But my computer not seeing the printer despite the driver being reinstalled all started when I completely uninstalled the driver and scanner per Brother's instructions, and then tried to reinstall it. Did I wipe something out that didn't come back with the download of the driver again?
