AirPods Pro Gen 2 silent on incoming calls iPhone XS Max

Ever since I bought AirPods Pro Gen 2 in Sept/Oct 2022, I have had huge problems receiving calls to my iPhone XS Max.

The problem is that on accepting the call, I can hear nothing through my AirPods Pro 2. Nor can the other party hear me speaking. The AirPods Pro 2 usually disconnect (either manually by me or automatically by the phone) and then reconnect again, and then the sound starts to come through. This all takes about 40 seconds.

I have done all the usual tricks, resetting, repairing, toggling automatic ear detection, etc. to no avail.

I have tested my AirPods Pro 2 with other iPhones, including 13, 13 mini, and 14 Pro, and they work perfectly. It just doesn't work with my phone.

I have done all the software updates to my iPhone XS Max. The problem still persists.

So this seems to be a compatibility problem between the iPhone XS/XS Max and the AirPods Pro 2. Does anyone know what the problem is? When will Apple fix this?
