how do I update an iPod classic that has been wiped?

I had a perfectly working iPod classic a week ago. somehow someone wiped it cleaned it seems ( I think it was connected to a smart tv and they hit reformat drive) so how can I get the software I need to get this thing working again? I plugged it into finder, it shows up but not the stuff I used to see like syncing with music (iTunes?) I think I just need to reinstall some apple iPod software and go, but I can seem to find it. TIA

The was a time that Apple provided separate software drivers for iPods, but these days it is part of iTunes, or Finder on post-Mojave Macs. Try the DFU recovery mode mentioned in the user tip if the iPod isn't showing up in iTunes. Alternatively try iOS device not showing in iTunes for Windows - Apple Community, despite the title the same steps can help with older devices.
