My old iPod Classic 80GB comes up with a red cross and a message; www.apple.com/support/ipod. I did connect it to my laptop with a usb cable, but my laptop does not pick it up. What now, or is it buggered for good?

How do I update or revive my old iPod Classic 80GB, when it comes up with a red cross and a message that refers me to www.apple.com/ipod/support ?

My computer does not pick it up when I connect it with a USB cable.

I would really like to use it again, or is it buggered for good?

The hard drive has probably failed. See If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support (archived copy). You could consider swapping out the drive with some form of SD adaptor kit.
