CarPlay takes over car radio in Mini and VW

CarPlay will not let me listen to the ordinary radio in either my Mini or other half’s VW. My phone is not being used, no apps are actively being looked at, screen is off… it if I pick radio in the car I get 1 second of radio before going back to CarPlay.

Other half’s iphone CarPlay works perfectly - he gets to listen to the radio

i just want to reiterate my iPhone is sitting dormant, unused and yet it will not let me select radio and stick with it.

it started off as a minor bug bear, a bit of a joke, it would switch to CarPlay for no reason but I could switch back to radio manually and it was ok. But now it’s all the time and it will not let the car stay in radio.

Help? And yes I’ve tried the usual things like pairing and unpairing etc.
