Unable to scan on a Brother MFC-L3770CDW Via AirPrint

I have a L3770CDW which Brother does not offer a driver for, instead using Apple's universal AirPrint driver. I've seen a few issues with this under Ventura:

  1. If already added, the scan functionality will cease to work after a few hours. When opening the scanner app in Settings, the app will show "Waiting for scanner". After what I assume is a timeout, it will show the message "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)".
  2. When removing and re-adding it, it exhibits different behavior seemingly at random:
  • It will show up in the printer list with a Kind of "Bonjour". It should be "Bonjour Multifunction".
  • It will show up but the driver ("Use:") will be "Generic PCL Printer" or it will not find an appropriate driver and show "Select Software", for which there is none.
  • If the printer is already added and the scanner stops working, attempting to add a new printer will find the printer with a Kind of "Bonjour Scanner". Adding this as a second device, the scanner works (at least temporarily).
  • It won't find the printer at all (a reboot of the Mac resolves this).

3. Booting to Safe Mode or resetting the Print System does not resolve the issue.

4. *Sometimes* rebooting the Mac and re-adding the printer is successful, though issue #1 will occur again.

Restarting the printer/router does not resolve the issue. Both the printer and the MacBook are using the same wireless network.

The "Brother iPrint&Scan" software always works (this software does not need the printer to be added to System Settings), though I'd rather not use this.

I'm having the exact same issue with a Brother MFC-2750DW. I connect with AirPrint, and have followed all of your troubleshooting steps, and gotten the same results. My machine is hardwired to the network, and have always been able to print without interruption. The scan function is a total crapshoot. Image Capture works far more reliably than navigating through the Scan app in settings. And I have three frequent users who have this issue, but not at the same time.

Have you found a reliable solution?

Try using Preview and/or Image Capture to scan. If they can't see the scanner then you'll need to look into its wireless connectivity and follow the directions in this Apple document: Reset the Mac printing system to solve a problem - Apple Support

If all else fails give the demo version of VueScan a try. I use it to wirelessly scan with my Epson All-in-One unit.

Hello TrevorSeward,

It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting. To get started, we recommend ensuring your scanner is set up correctly. You can learn how to do that here: Set up a scanner to use with Mac - Apple Support

These steps may help:

1. Before setting up your scanner, make sure macOS has the latest scanner software available to it. Check with your scanner’s manufacturer to see if any updates are available for your scanner model.
If you have a multifunction AirPrint printer and scanner, you don’t need to check for software updates.
2. Follow the instructions that came with the scanner to unpack it and connect it to your Mac.
If your Mac has a single USB-C port, and you want to connect a USB scanner, use a multiport adapter. Connect the scanner, then connect a USB-C cable to a power supply to prolong the battery life of your Mac. See Use USB-C cables with Mac.
Important: Don’t install software that came with the scanner. Your macOS computer downloads the latest scanner software automatically.
3. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Printers & Scanners  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
4. If you don’t see your scanner in the Printers list, click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax button on the right.
5. Select your scanner, then click Add.
If your scanner isn’t in the list, see the documentation that came with the scanner to find out how to scan with it.

If your scanner is set up correctly, you can learn how to resolve scanning problems with the information here: Solve scanning problems on Mac - Apple Support

Thanks.

Thanks for reply back with that information, TrevorSeward. Since those steps posted haven't worked, and you already tested the issue in safe mode, the next recommendation would be to test your scanner in another user. Create a new test user profile with the same administrative rights. Log in to it, then see how the scanner works. This will rule out possible underlying causes with your user profile.

Download and run Etrecheck. Be sure to give it Full Disk access before running.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the problem.
