Message app on Mac

I launch the message app, and it won't fully launch. it continues to say "application not responding"

I understand the Messages app is not responding. Please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.

If the Mac will not shut down because it is unable to terminate the Messages app, your may need to force the Mac to shut down by pressing and holding its Touch ID button until it shuts down. Then, try Safe Mode.
